Every single mechanical engineer has to study a subject called mechanics. Some call it MOM, some call it SOM, some call it EM. But whatever you may call it, it's always there and it's always the same. This subject tells us how to decide whether our design will fail or not. And it is a very complex subject. And the bad news is, we only study this until we get familiar with the concept of Simulation. Once you start doing simulations, there is no going back. I had a glimpse of simulation very early in my college life, way before it would have according to my syllabus. And then I got myself involved in another project that made me understand simulation to a very great extend. This was the design and manufacturing of HAWT. Basically, we were trying to make a hybrid wind turbine that can produce electricity safely inside a crowded city. And the very first step included the Fluent based simulations. Actually, the first step was a literature review, but yeah you got the point. So, my s...
Every single one of us has met a teacher in his/her life who is there only to make our life harder. It's the same teacher who apparently hates every student. It's the same teacher who appears to be tormented by students his whole life. It's the same teacher who gives you the minimum possible marks and smiles. Fortunately, we met this teacher quite earlier, when we were still kids and when we never took anything to our ego.
Oh, I forgot. By this time, we were intelligent enough to call our teachers as professors. So, there was this one professor, who was picturized as the guardian of Hell by our seniors. And there is one thing that happens in every college. The juniors think of themselves as better humans than the seniors, until they go through the same path of destruction. We being the naive, ego-maniac juniors assumed that our seniors couldn't handle the Professor, but we can. And believe me, when the day came, we were literally thrashed.
Throughout the semester, we attended this Professor's class only once a week. Just enough to maintain our attendance. And then came the results. We never understood why only this Professor never showed us our answer sheets before finalizing the results. Only when 90% of the students failed we understood the logic. Yeah, you read it right. 90% of the whole class either failed or was at the edge of failing. The top 5% of the people that gave JEE Mains, the people who were the toppers of their respective schools failed. That day I realized two things:
- Seniors are just as intelligent as us, maybe more.
- When the whole class fails, you do not feel sad at all.
This very specific incident had a huge impact on my life. I had failed for the first time. I witnessed the power of a Professor in a government college. I understood that I have to study and understand things all by myself. I realized that every single student in my class was the same as me. Nothing more, Nothing less.
Now that I remember this incident, I think that this could have happened only due to two reasons. Either the whole class didn't study for the whole semester. But that would mean that my seniors and their seniors also didn't study. Or the Professor was not a good teacher. And since I have studied that subject online now, and I think I have understood the concepts well. I'll say that for this once, in my whole life of blaming my teachers, I was right to blame my Professor.
This incident always makes me think about the education system in India. And I have a lot to say about it. But that's for another post. Right now, this incident is the one that makes us all laugh and understands how idiot we all were!
